Here is where i paste in my LLN Final Draft
Language define users’ activity, moreover Culture.
In the movie ‘Context’ which deals with communicating with alien, Sapir-Whorf hypothesis is appeared. According to Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, if someone immerses self into foreign language, then one is actually able to rewire one’s brain. As it said, language is important because they define user’s the process of thinking, moreover activity. As an international student, I am learning English as a second language. But, Different with other International students, I started studying abroad after being adult. During teenage, people create one’s personality and insight based on the culture where they grow up. In my teen, I grew up in Korea, therefore, my cultural background is created by Korea culture. In other word, I have chance to compare how two different language, English and Korean, create two different culture and what is the difference. The differences of two languages are order of grammar and Honorific language.
First of all, English and Korean have different grammatic order. The grammatic order of English is Subject, Verb and Object. However, the order of Korean is Subject, Object and Verb. This difference shows which grammatical factors are more important in language, moreover how effect to culture. English thinks verbs are important, and Korean thinks object is important. These differences define the behavior of users, and These differences are divided into challenges and stability in behavior, which affects the society in which users belong. English speakers put action or action first. Their lives take precedence over their movements, or actions, just as language prioritizes verbs. It seems that they’d like to more challenges. They Invest time to travel and experience various activities. 2 years ago, I went to California in order to earn skydiving license. There was about 20 people in dorm. But only one was from Asia. I was curious this race rate and talked about this with other people. I heard their attitude how face their life. What I felt was they do what they want to do. One said that they get time to explore their life before becoming social member, such as traveling or experience extreme thing like skydiving. On the other hand, Korean put object first, then verb. Like language, Korean speakers place more importance on the purpose or reason of the action. in general, in other words, Koreans seek stability then activity. Korean culture, which wants stability, does not takes action in its surroundings. In other words, they want to be assimilated with people who grow up like themselves in society. Therefore, age tends to define behavior. Activities Korean usually do is not various. Since, for example, graduating University most Korean just do study and after graduate, they just start to work. About 28 to 35 most Korean get marriage. This life looks like stereotype. Actually, I did not intend to study abroad. At first, I came here just for 6 months of Language course and go back to Korea to graduate as soon as possible. However, during studying English, I decided to stay and go to university. I think my though process was changed little to English culture. It likes “Sapir-Whorf hypothesis”. Therefore, the behavior of the people who use the language is also defined according to the values that are important in the language.
Second is using of honorific language. In Korea, the relationship between me and the other person is greatly influenced by their age. People older than themselves have a different language to use. Basically, language that should be used for older people has a meaning of respect. Therefore, vertical relationships are formed according to age differences. Such vertical relationships result in a lack of creativity in society, as they stiffen conversations with people who do not know their age for the first time and make it difficult to express the opinions of young people. These problems have existed for a long time. On the other hand, English has the same grammar regardless of age. These linguistic horizontal relationships also form horizontal relationships in real human relationships. Therefore, it is possible to have horizontal dialogue with a new person regardless of age and age, and to express opinions horizontally, thereby demonstrating creativity. I was university student in Korea and had taken the same architectural classes in Korea and the United States, I could feel this difference clearly. Korean classes feel like students follow the path in which an older professor takes the lead. Sometime the professor forces us to follow professor’s style. The advantage of this teaching way is the road is clear, but the disadvantage is that it is difficult to make creative Idea. What I felt in the US class, however, is that professor is behind students, so it feels like students are getting ahead of themselves in their own style just by giving them directions. And, Professor just help to direct when they go wrong way. Therefore, the same destination has a variety of creations that suit the students’ style. Thus, the form of language defines and create the relationship in the society.
The difference between English and Korean language brought different social activities and relationship, further defines the culture in which the language is written. As such, language is deeply involved in our lives and cultures. I think there is no superiority between the two languages, only two different cultures were formed by two different languages. Therefore, learning and understanding the language is like learning and understanding the people and cultures who use it. The 21st century we live in is a global world. In other words, our stage is the world and we must be able to understand and accept all the people and cultures of the world. The beginning of globalization would be to learn the language.
